THE EXPERIENCE

Archbold Biological Station, an ecological research station founded in 1941, will welcome its first steam-powered excursion train on October 20th. The four-hour journey will feature a 2-hour round-trip train ride and a 2-hour tour of the field station tour.

Passengers will visit Archbold’s historic buildings in the heart of the Florida Scrub and learn about the science and natural history of the scrub from Executive Director Hilary Swain as she explains Archbold’s scientific legacy, conservation efforts, and community outreach. Then embark on a short nature walk OR a walking history tour of the campus. Guests might even see a Gopher Tortoise or Florida Scrub Jay!

Archbold’s studies encompass dozens of research sites throughout the Headwaters of the Everglades including the ancient sand dunes of the Lake Wales Ridge; the ranchlands and wetlands that make up much of Central Florida; and the waterways that flow south into Lake Okeechobee and beyond. Archbold scientists study many rare species, some of which are found only in this region. Archbold’s Florida Scrub-Jay project is one of the longest-running continuous banded bird studies of any bird in the world 55 years and counting. Today, Archbold science guides state and local conservation efforts.
